PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc. (ABC) has a long tradition of sponsoring physician education and has offered updates on topics of interest to health care providers for more than three decades. ABC activities are designed to achieve two primary educationalgoals:
- Provide a forum for thought leaders in Cardiovascular Medicine to build awarenessof health disparities in cardiovascular risk management for people of color; and
- Challenge the target audiences with applying a mix of data, current practical perspective from expert thought leaders and translation of therapeutic guidelines, to the management of cardiovascular patients.
Today, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. and a recurrent cause of morbidity. Because of its complex nature, there is an ongoing need to discuss the current status and future direction of cardiovascular medicine and surgery.
This year’s program, Changing Paradigms in Major Aspect of Cardiovascular Care, will provide an update of new and developing therapies, technologies, research, guidelines and other concepts in response to frequent questions from cardiologists, primary care physicians and other health care providers. Topics have been selected to expand knowledge and to offer strategies to assist clinicians in the management of cardiovascular disease, including ß-blocker therapy and clinical outcomes, new and emerging advances in lipid lowering, new perspectives on glycemic management, cardiomyopathies and heart failure, and resource utilization in cardiovascular care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this educational program, participants should be better able to:

- Review evidence for use of beta blockers in reducing perioperative cardiac risk
- Review current guidelines supporting treatment and management recommendations for valve disease
- Assess glycemic control and CV risk in patients with type 2 diabetes; describe the role of HDL in reducing cardiovascular disease
- Discuss the interplay between race/ethnicity, inflammation and lipids
- Review potential implications of clinical research for prevention guidelines
- Demonstrate familiarity with the evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiomyopathies and heart failure
- Describe practical strategies to prevent or minimize cardiovascular risk factors in HIV-infected patients
- Describe the applications of cardiac MR and CT imaging in the diagnosis and management of unusual cardiomyopathies
- Examine resource utilization in cardiovascular care from clinical and payor perspectives
