Purpose / Description

The Association of Black Cardiologists’ 24th Annual Dr.Walter M. Booker, Sr. Memorial Symposium is designed for the healthcare professional to provide the latest information on a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases commonly encountered in every day practice. To coincide with the program’s theme, special emphasis will be placed on evidence-based guidelines driven medicine in the management of cardiovascular disease.

As indicated in the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) March 2011 report, “Clinical Practice Guidelines We Can Trust,” providers often rely upon recommendations included in various guidelines to manage their patients. Guidelines are literally that—guides. Unfortunately, they sometimes conflict or are not inclusive of all patients at risk (gender, ethnicity, race, age, etc.) or they are adhered to rigidly. At present, there are approximately 2,700 guidelines extant in the USA. So, how does one decide which are the most reliable or most germane for a particular patient and a particular problem?

The conference will review current and recent guidelines for each of the topic areas and, where appropriate, discuss how they impact healthcare disparities.

Intended Audience

The target audience for this activity includes physicians, especially cardiovascular specialists, internists, primary care physicians, family practice physicians, researchers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other health care professionals interested in the care of patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Credit Designation

The Association of Black Cardiologists designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.5 hours AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
