The Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc. is involved in advocacy in a number of ways at the local, regional and national levels:

Member Advocacy
The ABC offers support for individual members who may have been unfairly targeted by other members of the medical community. In such situations where professional competence is questioned, the ABC ensures fair representation for its members. The ABC is also very involved in promoting the careers and prominence of its members through nominations and support for appointments to high office in both the public and private arenas.

Professional Advocacy
Whether it's urging medical schools to admit more African Americans to cardiology training programs, or collaborating with other ABC partners about issues affecting the cardiology profession or the wider medical community, ABC is active in and committed to professional advocacy.

Important Legislation
The ABC has a presence in Washington, DC, working alongside lobbyists to ensure identified health issues are kept on the legislative agenda. We also support other groups lobbying for changes we advocate.

TAKE ACTION: The HEART for Women Act
The HEART for Women Act was introduced in the Senate by three bi-partisan female lawmakers on February 14, 2006.  The HEART for Women Act takes a multi-pronged approach to improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

The HEART for Women Act would authorize outreach to raise awareness about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women; tighten Food and Drug Administration requirements for reporting gender-based data about new and experimental medicines and devices; and expand cost-effective screening programs for low-income, uninsured women at risk for heart disease and stroke.

ABC supports the HEART for Women Act and encourages you to contact your Members of Congress about co-sponsoring the bill!
